ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT

A high quality training programme is conducted through the large number of Degree, and Fellowship Courses in the Institute at Undergraduate and Post- graduate Level, affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). The main objective of the Academic programmes of the Institute is to produce highly Skilled Rehabilitation Professionals who will take up the ever burgeoning load of the Disabled Community and who are at par with the best professionals in the world. The academic section comprises of the Academic In-charge, the Deputy Academic In-charges (Heads of Departments of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Prosthetics & Orthotics) workshop Manager, Academic and clerical staff. In addition, to in-house faculty, external lecturers are also engaged for various subjects.

I. Courses in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation emerged as a medical specialty after World War II and since then it has gained international acclaim and is one of the most sought after specialties today. Government of India started this institute for the development of this specialty half a century ago and today the Institute is training specialist doctors in this novel discipline. Even though PMR is considered a Non-surgical branch the world over, the Institute, along with many other medical colleges in the country is imparting the training as a Surgical Specialty. This is because the patient profile seen in PMR Departments in India differs considerably with sequelae of many diseases like Poliomyelitis, Hansen’s Disease, etc. which need Surgical Intervention.

1. Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

Course Objectives

To impart a thorough and comprehensive training to a Medical Graduate so that at the end of this course the trainee should be able

  1. To diagnose, evaluate, treat, and rehabilitate a person who is suffering from a temporary or permanent disability
  2. To plan, monitor, supervise and lead the execution of rehabilitation plan through an integrated, multi-disciplinary team
  3. To undertake research, teach medical and paramedical personnel, educate the person with disability, family, rehabilitation team members and community, and be well versed with recent advances, administrative, financial, ethical and legal aspects related to the specialty

Eligibility

  1. The candidate should have passed MBBS Degree Examination of recognized University
  2. The candidate completed one year compulsory rotatory Internship in a hospital recognized by the MCI

Selection

50% of seats are reserved for DGHS quota filled through All-India common entrance test and the other 50% for Maharashtra state CET.

Duration

Three years full time programme in Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Designation

Admitted candidates work in the capacity of Junior Resident doctors as per Central Government guidelines

Duties

II. Master of Physiotherapy (MPTh)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The goal of training of post-graduate candidate in the respective specialty is to enable him /her to function as a consultant in the respective physiotherapy specialty. The programme shall focus on clinical reasoning, problem solving and measurement of treatment outcome, emphasizing on the recent diagnostic & therapeutic trends in Manipulative Therapy, Neuro-Development Approach & Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapeutic skills.

Course objectives

At the end of the course the candidate shall be able to

  1. Acquire the in-depth Knowledge of structure and function of human body related to the respective branch of specialty
  2. Acquire the in-depth knowledge of movement dysfunction of human body, cause thereof & of principles which underlines the use of physiotherapeutic interventions, for restoring movement dysfunction towards normalcy
  3. Demonstrate ability to critically appraise recent physiotherapeutic and related medical literature from journals, adopt diagnostic & therapeutic skills based on it
  4. Demonstrate skill in Physical & Functional diagnosis pertaining to patient under care
  5. Demonstrate ability to make clinical decision & select appropriate outcome measures based on the comprehensive knowledge of theoretical aspects of specialty
  6. Demonstrate an expertise in evidence-based skill in the management of movement dysfunction
  7. Demonstrate an expertise in health promotion & quality restoration of functional movement pertaining to specialty
  8. Planning and implementation of treatment programme adequately and appropriately for all clinical conditions related to respective specialty in acute and chronic stage, in intensive care, indoor and outdoor institutional care, independent practice, on fields of sports and community and during disaster and natural calamities
  9. Demonstrate Proficiency in planning and executing Physiotherapy services and teaching technology skills
  10. Demonstrate the knowledge of legislation applicable to compensation for functional disability & appropriate certification

Eligibility

  1. The course is open for physiotherapists holding a bachelor’ degree from a recognized university with completion of six months compulsory internship
  2. andidate must be Indian national
  3. Student who have obtained Bachelor’s degree from Agricultural University and Distance Education are not eligible as per DMER/MUHS guidelines
  4. Course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik
  5. Eligibility of the candidates admitted is granted by MUHS, Nashik University an Institute takes no responsibility for the same. It is not assured by the institute at the time of admission that university will grant eligibility to the candidate

Selection

50% seats are for candidates who have passed Bachelor’s in physiotherapy from University in Maharashtra; selected through PG-CET conducted by Directorate of Medical Education & Research, Government of Maharashtra and 50% seats are for candidates from all over India including Maharashtra who have passed Bachelor’s in physiotherapy and selected through common Entrance Test conducted by this Institute.

III. Fellowship in Rehabilitation Physiotherapy

This course is affiliated to MUHS Nashik

The Aims of the course

To train qualified Physiotherapists to adopt restorative and rehabilitation measures for maximal possible functional independence of Persons with Locomotor Disability at home, workplace and in the community Total number of seats Available – 10

Eligibility for Admission

  1. The course is open for Qualified Physiotherapists holding Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Physiotherapy from a recognized University, with completion of Six Months internship during Bachelor of Physiotherapy
  2. Candidate should be Member of Maharashtra state council for Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy
  3. The candidate must be an Indian National

Candidates who have Physiotherapy Degree through Distance Education and from Agricultural University are not eligible

Duration

IV. Master in Occupational Therapy – (MOTh)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik

The MOTh course is intended to prepare candidates for assumption of responsibilities in positions of leadership as

V. Fellowship in Rehabilitation: Occupational Therapy

VI. Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (B.P.O.)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The course has engineering cum medical base having its application in loco motor Handicapped Course Objectives

Total number of seats Available – 30. (at present 16 seats are being operated)

Selection :

50% seats are for candidates from all over India including Maharashtra who have passed their H.S.C. (10 + 2) Examination, selection of which is done by this Institute through UG NEET score. 50% are for candidates who have passed their H.S.C. (10 + 2) Examination from Colleges/Schools from Maharashtra State, selection of which is done by Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Duration

Four and half years (including six months compulsory internship)

VII. Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics (M.P.O.)

This course affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

Programme Objectives

Eligibility

Candidates who have passed their BPO course from any Institute, recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India- New Delhi are eligible for admission to the MPO course as per the prevailing rules and guidelines. The students pursuing Masters in Prosthetics and Orthotics are supposed to work on dissertation topics of their choice and submit their thesis within three months prior to their appearing in the final examination apart from classroom training and clinical work. There is a University Examination at the end of each year and the degree of MPO will be conferred after the candidate has successfully passed the final exams at the end of the second year.

50% seats are for candidates who have passed BPO from University in Maharashtra; selected through PG-CET conducted by Directorate of Medical Education & Research – Government of Maharashtra and 50% seats are for candidates from all over India including Maharashtra who passed BPO; selected through common Entrance Test conducted by this Institute

2 years, commencing in August

VIII. Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS)

Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS) has been launched by the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore(A.I.I.S.H.) under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is one of the study centers for the same Objectives Effective implementation of National Program on Prevention and Control of Deafness and Rehabilitation of communication disorder

Special Features

Classes are conducted through video conferencing system in collaboration with A.I.I.S.H. where classes are imparted by video conferencing mode

IX. Fellowship course in Rehabilitation surgery (FCRS)

This course is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.

Course Objectives To impart a thorough and comprehensive training to a post Graduate so that at the end of this course the trainee should be able

  1. To develop clinical acumen towards patient evaluation and surgical decision making
  2. To train the candidates in counseling patients regarding gains from surgical intervention
  3. To develop skills required for preoperative planning
  4. To inculcate the philosophy of evidence based intervention
  5. To demonstrate and develop surgical skills in the candidate
  6. Participation in inpatient and outpatient clinical activities at all affiliated programs
  7. To develop postoperative protocol and rehabilitative skills for optimal functional outcome
  8. Keep pace with recent advance3s in the field of surgical rehabilitation.
