Traditionally, the role of  medical education has been in the area of prevention and treatment. There is an increasing emphasis and responsibility being placed on the medical profession in the aspect of rehabilitation especially in the ageing population, chronic & disabilities, and congentital anomalies.

The main objective of a Rehabilitation service is to identify the avoidable causes of disability, maximize the use of their abilities and achieve independence as productive members of the society. There are very few Rehabilitation services in teaching hospitals and a course of this nature aims to create an awareness & providing basic knowledge in the field of Medical Rehabilitation among medical professionals by gining an insight  into  specialties of  Rehabilitation.

Under Graduate training courses in Nursing are presently, primarily organised around delivering services for diseases & injuries. Nursing care should encompass more than care in crisis or acute illness. It is now recognised that the chronically ill or disabled need rehabilitation to be able to function in the mainstream of society. The important of rehabilitation services can be understood only if training in Nursing is directed towards prevention of disability in the early stages of the illness, maintenance of function and learning the special Nursing techniques required in the post operative phase of orthopedic and reconstructive surgeries. Education for this unique role must include opportunities for learning with this need in mind, a post graduate Diploma in Rehabilitation for Nurses has been planned.

The course is engineering cum medical base having its application in locomotor Handicapped. Students are trained in manufacturing and fitting various types of orthopedic aids and appliances needed for the physically disabled. The course is self-employment oriented  and after passing, the professional can function independently and provide services to the disabled persons.

            The candidates are selected, on the basis of merit by a selection committee constituted by the Director. 20 seats are available of which 10 are awarded to the candidates from Maharashtra selected on the base of common entrance test of MUHS and 10 seats to candidates to outside Maharashtra.
